Valley Road Vineyards is pleased to announce that its Gold Medal-winning 2014 Petit Verdot has won one of the twelve spots in the Governor’s Case in the 35th annual Governor’s Cup awards. Born of fruit sourced in the Monticello AVA, made by King Family Vineyards’ Matthieu Finot, and bottled at KFV, Valley Road’s 2014 Petit Verdot was one of twenty-three wines awarded a Gold Medal out of nearly 500 entered in this year’s competition. “Having opened our tasting room only in July 2016, we are delighted to achieve this honor in our first full year of operation,” remarked Stan Joynes, Co-Founder and CEO of Valley Road Vineyards. He continued, “We are proud to be in the company of exceptional wineries, including our neighbors at Cardinal Point, Pollak, Veritas, and King Family, who together account for more than one-third of the Gold Medal recipients this year.”
Tasting notes are assembled for each wine on the characteristics of Appearance, Aroma, Flavor, Overall Quality, and Commercial Sustainability. Wines are then judged on the 100-point Wine Spectator scale of 7 levels ranging from “No Score” to “A Classic Wine.” To achieve a Gold Medal, the wine must score between 90-100 points. Judging took place in two rounds of blind tastings over a four-week period. A distinguished panel of 40 judges, including Master Sommeliers, celebrated culinarians, and international wine educators sampled 494 wines from 102 Virginia Wineries. Only 12 of the 494 were selected for inclusion in the Governor’s Cup Case.
The twelve wines that make up the Governor’s Cup Case and the overall winner of the Governor’s Cup were announced by Governor Terry McAuliffe on February 21 at the annual Governor’s Cup Gala.
