Valley Road Vineyards Appoints New Marketing Director

Afton, Va. (July 9, 2018) – Valley Road Vineyards is pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara Joynes as its Marketing Director.

Most recently in the role of Senior Vice President and Director of Account Management at Richmond-based West Cary Group, Barbara has enjoyed over 30 years leading advertising agencies in NYC and Richmond. Prior to West Cary Group, she was with The Martin Agency, where she became the firm’s first female partner and served in a variety of roles, including Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. Clients that have benefited from her strategic expertise include Mercedes-Benz, Morgan Stanley, UPS, American Express, and GEICO, to name a few.

CEO and President of West Cary Group, Moses Foster, spoke highly of Barbara’s marketing pedigree, commenting, “With her proven track record of building brands, combined with the ability to generate bottom-line results for her clients, Barbara is a perfect fit for Valley Road Vineyards.”

In addition to her career achievements, Barbara has also spent a great deal of time giving back to the community. Her past civic involvement includes Board roles with the William and Mary Alumni Association, Henrico Doctors Hospital, YWCA of Richmond, and the Children’s Museum of Richmond, among others.

Barbara can’t wait to put her experience to work for Valley Road, saying, “There has never been a more exciting time in the Virginia wine industry. I look forward to helping Valley Road continue to promote its brand which is based on outstanding wines, while driving additional revenue through events and getting our wines broader distribution so that even more people can enjoy their quality.”

Valley Road Vineyards 2015 Viognier Wins Governor’s Cup Gold

Valley Road Vineyards is pleased to announce that its 2015 Viognier has won Gold in the 36th annual Virginia Governor’s Cup awards.

Born of fruit sourced in the Monticello AVA, made by King Family Vineyards’ Matthieu Finot, and bottled at KFV, Valley Road’s 2015 Viognier was one of ninety-nine wines awarded a Gold Medal out of over 440 entered in this year’s competition. “We are Virginia Viognier by Valley Roadthrilled that our Viognier was selected as a gold medal winner,” remarked Stan Joynes, Co-Founder and CEO of Valley Road Vineyards. He continued, “We are proud to be in the company of exceptional wineries achieving this honor for their Viognier varietals, including our Nelson 151 neighbors at Veritas.” Of the ninety-nine gold medal winners, eleven were Viogniers.

Tasting notes are assembled for each wine on the characteristics of Appearance, Aroma, Flavor, Overall Quality, and Commercial Sustainability. Wines are then judged on the 100-point Wine Spectator scale of 7 levels ranging from “No Score” to “A Classic Wine.” To achieve a Gold Medal, the wine must score between 90-100 points. Judging took place in two rounds of blind tastings over a four-week period. A distinguished panel of 20 judges, including Master Sommeliers, celebrated culinarians, and international wine educators sampled over 440 wines from 100 Virginia Wineries.

Tastings.com Awards Valley Road Vineyards with Two Silver Medals

The Tastings.com World Wine Championships is America’s oldest annual international wine competition and has been operated objectively for 38 years. It is a blind tasting, medal-based competition that awards based on a 100-point scale. Wines are judged by Tastings.com‘s trained staff joined by top Wine professionals and buyers from retailers and restaurants using a proven, consistent, proprietary methodology developed in collaboration with Cornell University. The Tastings.com World Wine Championships distributes its monthly results to consumers and the trade through Tastings.com, a free consumer website with tens of thousands of unique users a month on its searchable databases and via social media @tastingsbti.

Valley Road Releases Three Wines in Advance of Virginia Wine Month

In the three weeks preceding Virginia Wine Month (held annually each October), Valley Road Vineyards is releasing one new varietal each Saturday. They include two robust reds, and the winery’s first dessert varietal.

Trillium (release date: September 16)
Appealing flavors of peach and honey blend with a touch of citrus in this Late Harvest style wine. 4.2% residual sugar.
2015 Cabernet Franc (release date: September 23)
Highlighted by bright fruits on the nose and pallet, oak aged with a peppery finish.
2015 Petit Verdot (release date: September 30)
Abundant dark fruits, soft tannins, and a smooth lingering finish are featured in this big Virginia red.

Valley Road Vineyards Hosts Tourism Group

On August 31, area tourism professionals gathered at Valley Road Vineyards for a semi-annual meeting coordinated by the Charlottesville-Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau. Speakers included CACVB staff Kurt Burkhart, Executive Director; Bri Warner, Marketing & Public Relations; Ellen Sewell, Digital Marketing Coordinator; Brantley Ussery, Marketing and Sales. In addition, Rita McClenny, CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation introduced the #StandforLove campaign alongside VTC Board Chairwoman, Susan Payne. “It was our pleasure to host fellow tourism partners and introduce them to our wines and venue,” remarked Stan Joynes, CEO of Valley Road Vineyards.

 

Valley Road Launches Sunday Beach Party Series

With temperatures on the rise in Central Virginia, area wine lovers need a place to cool down. So the team at Valley Road thought, “why not bring the beach to the mountains one day per week?” Relax indoors or out on the patio and enjoy surf tunes, themed selfie stations, and of course Frosé with a mini umbrella.

Valley Road Earns Recognition at the 2017 State Fair Wine Competition

On June 12, 2017, Valley Road Vineyards was awarded a Silver Medal for its 2014 Meritage in the 24th annual State Fair of Virginia Wine Competition. It also received an award for its labels in the Best Contemporary Series category. Valley Road would like to thank its principal design agency, Watermark Design, who is responsible for the branding and ongoing label design for the winery.

2014 Petit Verdot

Valley Road Vineyards is pleased to announce that its Gold Medal-winning 2014 Petit Verdot has won one of the twelve spots in the Governor’s Case in the 35th annual Governor’s Cup awards. Born of fruit sourced in the Monticello AVA, made by King Family Vineyards’ Matthieu Finot, and bottled at KFV, Valley Road’s 2014 Petit Verdot was one of twenty-three wines awarded a Gold Medal out of nearly 500 entered in this year’s competition. “Having opened our tasting room only in July 2016, we are delighted to achieve this honor in our first full year of operation,” remarked Stan Joynes, Co-Founder and CEO of Valley Road Vineyards. He continued, “We are proud to be in the company of exceptional wineries, including our neighbors at Cardinal Point, Pollak, Veritas, and King Family, who together account for more than one-third of the Gold Medal recipients this year.”

Tasting notes are assembled for each wine on the characteristics of Appearance, Aroma, Flavor, Overall Quality, and Commercial Sustainability. Wines are then judged on the 100-point Wine Spectator scale of 7 levels ranging from “No Score” to “A Classic Wine.” To achieve a Gold Medal, the wine must score between 90-100 points. Judging took place in two rounds of blind tastings over a four-week period. A distinguished panel of 40 judges, including Master Sommeliers, celebrated culinarians, and international wine educators sampled 494 wines from 102 Virginia Wineries. Only 12 of the 494 were selected for inclusion in the Governor’s Cup Case.

The twelve wines that make up the Governor’s Cup Case and the overall winner of the Governor’s Cup were announced by Governor Terry McAuliffe on February 21 at the annual Governor’s Cup Gala.
